Weekly Meal Planning for Busy Families: A 20-Minute Routine
October 13, 2026"What's for dinner?" is a small question that costs a lot: extra takeaway, last-minute shopping trips and food that goes off in the fridge. A 20-minute meal plan once a week fixes most of it.
Step 1: Check your week (2 minutes)
Look at the calendar first. Late meetings, sports practice or a night out all change what you can cook. Mark the busy nights for quick meals or leftovers. Our free weekly schedule maker is handy for this.
Step 2: Shop your kitchen (5 minutes)
Open the fridge, freezer and cupboards and note what needs using up. Build at least two meals around those ingredients. This one habit cuts food waste more than anything else.
Step 3: Pick five dinners (5 minutes)
Plan five dinners, not seven. Leave room for leftovers and one easy night. Keep a running list of family favourites so you're never starting from a blank page.
Step 4: Write the grocery list (5 minutes)
Go through each meal and write down only what you don't already have, grouped by aisle. A grocery list that matches your meal plan means one shop for the whole week.
Step 5: Put it where everyone can see it (3 minutes)
Stick the plan on the fridge. When the family can see what's coming, there are fewer debates, and anyone home first can start dinner.
Make it a habit
Pick the same time every week, for example Sunday morning with a coffee. After a month, it takes half the time.
Our meal planner templates include a weekly meal plan with a matching grocery list, a pantry checklist and recipe cards. For the rest of the household, see the family planner pages: cleaning schedules, chore charts and a family budget.
