How to Plan Your Month in 20 Minutes

October 13, 2026
How to Plan Your Month in 20 Minutes

A weekly plan tells you what to do. A monthly plan tells you what's coming. Twenty minutes at the end of each month is enough to spot busy weeks, remember birthdays and make sure bills never sneak up on you.

1. Look back first (5 minutes)

Before planning next month, glance at this one. What went well? What kept getting pushed back? Carry anything important over to a specific date.

2. Add the dates that can't move (5 minutes)

Birthdays, appointments, school events, paydays and bill due dates go on the calendar first. Seeing them together shows you which weeks will be tight.

3. Choose one or two focus goals (3 minutes)

Pick one or two things to make progress on this month, like a savings goal, a project or a habit. Write them at the top of the page.

4. Color-code the busy weeks (2 minutes)

Highlight travel, deadlines and paydays in different colors. A busy week you can see coming is much easier to handle.

5. Schedule your weekly check-ins (5 minutes)

Mark a short planning slot each Sunday. That's where the monthly plan turns into a weekly schedule and a daily to-do list.
