How to Plan a Trip Itinerary, Day by Day

A trip itinerary should make your holiday easier, not turn it into a timetable. The best ones have a clear plan for each day, the important bookings in one place, and enough free time to enjoy where you are.

1. Start with the fixed points

Write down everything with a set time first: flights, trains, hotel check-in and check-out, tours and restaurant bookings. These are the anchors for each day.

2. Give each day one main thing

Pick one highlight per day, like a museum, a hike or a day trip, and plan the rest around it. Trying to see five sights a day is the fastest way to come home exhausted.

3. Group by area

Put places that are close together on the same day. You'll spend less time on buses and more time actually seeing things.

4. Add travel time and breaks

Getting from A to B always takes longer than the map says. Add buffer time, a proper lunch and a slow afternoon or two, especially with kids.

5. Keep bookings and addresses together

Write hotel addresses, check-in times and booking names in one place. Keep confirmation numbers and passwords in your email or booking apps rather than on a printed page.

6. Make a packing list from the plan

Look at each day and pack for what you're actually doing: walking shoes for city days, a swimsuit for the beach, chargers and medicines for everyone. Tick items off as they go in the bag.
